‘Dubtrek 2009’
The Convoy of Adventure titled ‘Dubtrek 2009’,
The VW camper van and Beetle enthusiasts will be the pioneers of an annual event they will be Alan Whicker, Blashford-Snell, Hemingway and Cecil Rhodes, all rolled into one, over a four week period between April and May 2009 they will drive the most popular route as selected by interested Dubtrekkers.
The convoy will meet and sign in at Poole Harbour docks in Poole Dorset for the ferry crossing to Cherbourg in Northern France, then onwards to overnights in Nantes, Bordeaux, Zaragoza and Valencia then onwards to Malaga and Marbella in Andalucia for an overnight in readiness for the short trip to the port of Tarifa and then by ferry (approx 2hrs) to Tangier for an overnight and day off with time to visit the Medina’s and Kasbahs, then it’s onwards eastwards through the Rif mountains for an overnight at the Mediterranean Spanish occupied coastal fishing port of Melilla then onto Oujda on the Algerian frontier where not being able to cross into Algeria due to a boarder dispute we then head off South into the Sahara Desert past the camel convoys with an overnight in the desert oasis of Erford where the Berber tribes and Bedouin nomads still trade and live in tented camps today.
Then through the Atlas Mountains to the costal resort of Agadir for a couple days rest and relaxation on the beach then its north to Marrakech.
In Marrakech we have a special culinary treat where the famous TV chef Keith Floyd’s personnel assistant TV chef (a dub trekker) as he is seen in the TV series ‘Floyd Around the Med’ will demonstrate a typical Moroccan dish for all to sample in this evening of celebration at the organisers expense will treat everyone to a traditional Moroccan outdoor barbeque at our overnight campsite and a day off to follow, here you also have the opportunity to visit the Djemaa el-Fna night market a spectacular scene selling street food, then next day it’s on the road to (bogy’s) Casablanca returning to Tangier via an overnight at the most ancient of the imperial capitals and the most complete medieval city of the Arab world, Fez, and then it’s the ferry from Tangier back to Tarifa returning through Spain via a day off stop in beautiful Seville and onwards to Madrid to San Sebastian in Northern Spain and onto an overnight in the French fishing port of La Rochelle then the ferry from Cherbourg to Poole and a one hour journey to a grand finale finish at the Van West festival in Sparkford on the A303 where Dubtrek 2009 finish post is and planning for Dubtrek 2010 starts..
For fun in the evenings and on the days off the Dubtrekkers and their families will be able to enter a cooking competition, entertain and play instruments around a campfire or on a beach, Volksworld magazine has joined forces by supporting Dubtrek 2009 and will not only reporting throughout the trip but also running an educational competition for children out of school (best essay with drawings and paintings), the enthusiast’s will have one to two days off from driving each week to sightsee, service their wagons or just relax in the sun.
Driving just 4 to 6 hours a day at an estimated (see how it goes) 30 mph with catching up resting points on route this will be a great big family adventure outing the largest VW convoy of 60 plus vehicles to go on tour with controlled resting points and selected secure overnight campsites each night, Any necessary travel documents and visa’s will be applied for by the organisers, route cards and a convoy leader ‘Sunray’ will ensure that the family travel together. Accident, medical and breakdown support will be on hand travelling in the convoy.
To ensure the convoy stays together and for safety and security CB radios with (magnetic aerials) are recommended, Sunray will have a satellite telephone. Each Dub trekker will received a detailed route pack with the daily route instructions, the booked ferry instructions, booked camp site details, travel and emergency information, Fuel and road tolls costs, Maps, a log book, identifying stickers, souvenir sticker, and travel visa’s for the countries required.
They will have the days off to explore the cultural, geographical, and gastronomic customs of the countries and regions that we pass through, if some drivers do not wish to drive in convoy but rather in small groups establishing their own pace and wish to break off from the convoy to stay a little longer they will be able to catch up the convoy at a later date further on the route or at the next organised campsite . This is a fun trip with our intention to finish with the same number of vehicles we start with in a 27 day approximately 3800 mile adventure.
We reserve the right to make any necessary route changes and alterations as conditions prevail that may be required.
